If you can’t beat ‘em, poke some fun at ‘em.
The line I see often on shirts and mugs: “Be careful or you’ll end up in my novel” could not be truer. I’m always stealing things from my surroundings for my books.
I absolutely loved writing Dustin Time. I can’t believe it was already 6 years ago since I finished book #1. I had dozens of chiro appointments while writing it (since I was doing powerhouse word count days). The chiropractor was absolutely hysterical & I had to poke fun and add a scene with him. The character grew even more in book 2.
The main character, Katie, is a vet. I used my 4 years of working for vets to bring in little tidbits here and there. Write what you know, right? (That’s also why she’s sassy and has a potty mouth!) I recall one surgery where a cat released her bladder and the tech hollered, “$#it!” The veterinarian promptly corrected her with, “No. That’s the solid one.”
You’d think the way Dusty is dead set on NOT being a lawyer, that I had some personal experience with them and set out for “paybacks” of someone. Really, I didn’t. I’m not sure why it just fit his character and added to the storyline. And besides, who doesn’t love a good lawyer joke? They flow plentiful in all three of them.
I never expected there’s be a book #2 – let alone a book #3. I guess some characters just refuse to shut up! It was a pleasant surprise though. I did the one thing I’ve always said I wanted to do – write a sci-fi. Well, it’s ½ sci-fi. Katie is actually reading Dusty’s 3rd novel throughout the book. I loved the freedom of creating my own races with their special talents and quirks. One main character was especially fun to write with her inability to get the knack for earth slang.
I hope you enjoy reading these half as much as I enjoyed writing them.
Dustin Time is currently on sale for 99¢ to give you that kick to get the party started on the trilogy.
Happy Reading! June

June, who prefers to go by Bug, was born in Philadelphia but moved to Maui, Hawaii when she was four. She met her “Prince Charming” on Kauai and is currently living “Happily Ever After” in a small town in Minnesota. Her son and daughter are her greatest accomplishments. She takes pride in embarrassing them every chance she gets. Being hopelessly addicted to 80’s music is her super power.
